The unrest comes after weeks of anti-government protests throughout Iran, pushed by public anger over financial hardship, political repression and long-standing grievances towards the Islamic Republic.
Demonstrations have repeatedly flared in Tehran and different main cities, prompting hardline responses from safety forces loyal to the regime, in addition to drawing rising concern from Western governments.
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump weighed in on the disaster, saying: “It is time to search for new management in Iran.”
