Plans to breathe new life right into a closed theatre in a Somerset market city have moved a step nearer. Council planning chiefs have granted planning permission for the £15 million redevelopment of the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil.
The theatre, standard amongst locals, has been shut since Could 2023. A earlier larger-scale refurbishment was scrapped as a result of growing prices, reviews say. New plans for the Octagon Theatre embrace an enlargement to the backstage space and a brand new studio house.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, from Somerset Council, mentioned: ”Securing planning permission is a giant step ahead for this bold challenge.
“We now have the inexperienced mild to maneuver to the subsequent stage in delivering a contemporary, accessible and vibrant theatre that can serve Somerset for generations.
“This challenge is a serious public funding, and we stay dedicated to delivering it responsibly, on time and on price range.”
“The improved services will strengthen Yeovil’s supply, enhance our native financial system and supply an excellent higher venue for audiences and the various gifted teams who name The Octagon their dwelling.”
Work on the Octagon Theatre is anticipated to get underway through the 2026/27 monetary 12 months.
