Newark Airport: New Jersey air hub grinds to a halt after ‘fireplace erupts’

The main airport served greater than 48 million passengers in 2024.

A serious worldwide airport halted all flights on Monday, March 23, following studies of a fireplace close to the Air Visitors Management tower. New Jersey’s Newark Liberty Worldwide Airport halted operations this morning, simply hours after LaGuardia airport was pressured to shut following a horror collision between an Air Canada aircraft and a car on the bottom.

“Arrivals and departures ‌are quickly paused at Newark Liberty Worldwide Airport in ​New Jersey after air site visitors controllers evacuated the tower due to a burning ​odor coming from an elevator,” ⁠the FAA stated in a press release after studies of a fireplace close to the tower. All ATC employees had been evacuated from the tower, however it later emerged there was no blaze. The Newark Airport resumed operations afterward March 23.
