Seize your lifejackets, of us, as a result of the Good Ship BBC is formally sinking. For the very best a part of a century, the Beeb has been the proud dwelling of the Boat Race – a relationship relationship all the best way again to their first radio broadcast of the competition in 1927, a time when a ‘set off warning’ was only a pleasant bit of recommendation out of your native gamekeeper. However not.

Why? As a result of the BBC’s new head of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, confirmed “little or no enthusiasm” for the occasion – probably the most iconic fixtures of the British sporting calendar, no much less – deeming the historic conflict between Oxford and Cambridge on the Thames as “elitist”. Heaven forbid the nationwide broadcaster showcases a 200-year-old custom involving two of our most interesting and most prestigious universities. However no. That is far too proudly British for the fashionable BBC. ‘Custom’, it appears, is a grimy phrase over there – proper up there ‘fundamental impartiality’ and ‘good comedy’.

The corporate is exhibiting such a bewildering willingness to stay two fingers as much as their very own heritage that it makes me marvel: will the rot cease right here?

We have already seen the Six Nations bleed over to different channels. Are they going to give up Wimbledon as a result of strawberries and cream are too bourgeois? Will they bin the World Cup to keep away from broadcasting the St George’s Cross – a picture apparently extra terrifying to BBC executives than the dictionary definition of a lady?

Licence payment payers aren’t simply being short-changed, we’re being taken for absolute mugs. It is excessive time we ended this state-sponsored extortion racket and gave the British public a full, unreserved refund.

Lower the wire, defund the lot of them and solid them adrift into the ruthless business waters they despise a lot. With out our mandated tens of millions protecting them afloat, I give the Good Ship BBC a fortnight earlier than it sinks with no hint.
