A “masterpiece” battle movie that is hailed as “unforgettable” is streaming within the UK. Come and See (1985) is a Soviet epic historic anti-war drama set in the course of the German occupation of Byelorussia (now Belarus) throughout World Warfare 2.
The story is instructed from the attitude of Belarusian teenager Flyora (performed by Aleksei Kravchenko) who joins a partisan unit combating again towards the invaders, bearing witness to atrocities carried out by Germany’s forces. It was directed by Soviet filmmaker Elem Klimov, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ales Adamovich, himself a member of a partisan unit. It is primarily based on Adamovich’s personal 1971 novel, Khatyn, and on I Am from the Fiery Village, a set of survivor testimonies to which he contributed.
