The Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA, which obtained the figures, is pushing for better transparency on council spending on web zero tasks, urging native authorities to “prioritise dependable core providers and worth for cash over pricey symbolic purchases”.
Of the 22 councils in Wales, seven didn’t present a response and eight reported having no electrical bin lorries. A minimum of £11,936,435 has been spent on electrical bin lorries and related charging infrastructure, warranties and upkeep since 2021.
Jonathan Eida of the TPA stated: “Welsh taxpayers will rightly ask why tens of millions are being spent on electrical bin lorries and charging stations. As households throughout Wales grapple with rising tax payments, councils are diverting valuable sources away from frontline providers and into pricey eco-vanity tasks. Native authorities must deal with offering environment friendly and dependable providers that replicate native priorities, not splashing money on the most recent inexperienced fad.”
